The Farmer Who Found a New Way to Farm
Rodrigo Santos transformed his farming practices and his community through sustainable agriculture

Rodrigo Santos was a traditional rice farmer, practicing methods passed down through generations. He worked hard, from sunrise to sunset, tending to his small plot of land with the same techniques his father and grandfather had used. But when climate change made his harvests unpredictable and crop yields dwindled, he knew he had to change.
The answer came through a workshop run by a local NGO, which introduced him to sustainable farming practices that could improve yields and protect the environment. The workshop was a revelation. Rodrigo learned about techniques he had never heard of, and he realized that there were alternatives to the conventional farming methods he had been using.
Rodrigo learned about diversification, planting a mix of rice, vegetables, and fruits, which improved soil health and reduced crop losses. He began using natural pest control, eliminating the need for chemical pesticides. He also adopted water-efficient irrigation techniques, reducing the amount of water he needed for his crops.
"I was skeptical at first," Rodrigo admits. "But I saw the results. The soil became healthier, the crops were more robust, and I didn't have to spend money on expensive chemicals."
Rodrigo's success has inspired other farmers in his community. He now serves as a trainer for other farmers, sharing his knowledge and experience.
