From Trash to Treasure: The Women Rebuilding Their Lives Through Upcycling

IIn the bustling streets of Quezon City, a group of women is turning the tide on poverty and waste. They are members of a cooperative that collects discarded materials—plastic bottles, paper, fabric scraps, and metal—and transforms them into beautiful handicrafts and household products. Their work is providing income for dozens of families, all while reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

"I used to throw everything away," says Leticia Bautista, one of the cooperative's founding members. "It just seemed like garbage. But when I started learning about upcycling, I realized that I had been throwing away opportunities. These materials can be valuable if you give them a second life."

The cooperative started small, with just a handful of women meeting in a cramped room to work on crafts. But word spread, and more women joined. They soon outgrew their space and moved to a larger location, where they now have proper workstations and a small storefront.

The products are diverse, from handbags made of woven plastic strips to lampshades made from recycled paper. Each piece is unique, reflecting the creativity and skill of the women who make them. The products have been well-received by customers who appreciate their sustainability and beauty.

"We are survivors," Leticia says with a smile. "We started with nothing, but now we have something. We have an income, we have a community, and we have a purpose. We are showing our children that you can create something beautiful from what others consider waste."
