Indigenous Knowledge Meets Modern Science: How the Ifugao Rice Terraces Are Adapting to Climate Change
A 2,000-year-old farming system finds new resilience through a partnership between elders and scientists

For over two thousand years, the Ifugao people of the Cordillera region have farmed their legendary rice terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site often called the "eighth wonder of the world." These terraces, carved into mountain slopes by hand over generations, represent one of humanity's greatest engineering achievements—a sustainable agricultural system that has provided food security and cultural identity for millennia. The terraces are not just agricultural infrastructure; they are living monuments to the ingenuity and resilience of the Ifugao people.
But even this ancient system is not immune to climate change. Unpredictable rainfall patterns, more frequent typhoons, and rising temperatures have threatened the delicate hydrological balance that sustains the terraces. The indigenous irrigation system, which relies on complex water-sharing agreements among communities, has been strained by drought and flash floods. Traditional rice varieties, which had thrived for centuries, are now struggling with new pests and diseases. The uncertainty has created anxiety among farmers, many of whom have never experienced such instability in their lifetimes.
"We always had our own way of reading the weather," explains Apo Lita Humiwat, 72, a mumbaki or traditional leader from the village of Kiangan. "We observe the behavior of birds and insects, the flowering of certain trees, the direction of the wind. But we also recognized that something was changing, something our ancestors hadn't seen before. That's when we decided to bring in the scientists."
The partnership began in 2018 when the Ifugao community invited researchers from the University of the Philippines and the International Rice Research Institute to work alongside them. The collaboration was not about imposing outside expertise but about co-creating solutions that respected both traditional knowledge systems and modern science. The results have been transformative. Scientists brought weather monitoring stations, soil sensors, and satellite imagery to help communities anticipate climate events. In return, the Ifugao elders shared their intricate understanding of the terraces' hydrology.
"We're not abandoning our heritage—we're strengthening it," says Dr. Robert Dela Cruz, the lead researcher. "The Ifugao terraces were always a dynamic system, always adapting. What we've done is given them a new set of tools to continue that adaptation in a time of unprecedented change."
