The Urban Composting Collective: Turning City Waste into Community Wealth

IIn the heart of Makati, a group of residents has transformed organic waste management. They've built a community composting facility that turns food scraps and other organic waste into high-quality compost for urban gardens. The project has diverted thousands of kilograms of waste from landfills, improved soil health in local gardens, and created a small business model that supports the community.

"We saw the waste piling up and thought, 'There's got to be a better way,'" says Carlos Perez, one of the founding members. "We started composting at home, but we realized that we could have a bigger impact if we organized."

The composting facility is now managed by a cooperative, which collects organic waste from households and businesses in the area. The cooperative sells the compost to urban farmers and gardeners, creating a revenue stream that supports the community.

The project is a model of urban sustainability. It demonstrates that cities can reduce their waste footprint, create economic opportunities, and build community resilience.
