Urban Farmers: How Rooftop Gardens Are Feeding Cities and Cooling the Heat
Over 500 rooftop gardens across Metro Manila are transforming concrete jungles into productive green spaces

In the concrete jungle of Metro Manila, a green transformation is sprouting—on the rooftops. Over the past five years, an urban agriculture movement has taken root, transforming underutilized building tops into productive farms that are feeding communities, creating jobs, and helping to mitigate the urban heat island effect. This movement is part of a broader shift towards more sustainable, resilient, and equitable cities.
The movement began in the district of Mandaluyong, where a group of volunteers established the first community rooftop farm on a government building. The idea was simple: grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers on surfaces that were otherwise unused, using techniques like hydroponics, aeroponics, and soil-based cultivation that minimized water usage and didn't require large land areas.
"We started small, just a few plots of lettuce and tomatoes," recalls Ana Cruz, one of the founders of the Metro Manila Urban Farming Network. "But once people saw what was possible, it really took off. Now we have over 500 rooftop gardens across the metro, from schools and hospitals to residential buildings and shopping malls."
The benefits extend far beyond the produce. Rooftop gardens reduce the urban heat island effect by absorbing sunlight and releasing moisture through evaporation, cooling the air both above and below them. In dense neighborhoods, rooftop gardens can lower ambient temperatures by up to 5 degrees Celsius. They also capture stormwater runoff, reducing pressure on aging drainage systems. And they create habitats for pollinators and birds in otherwise barren urban landscapes.
